The Bland homestead also known as Johnson River homestead, is located near the Johnson River on the South side of Quatsino Sound in the Northwest of Vancouver Island. The nearest village, Quatsino, is 12 km (7.5 miles) by boat across Quatsino Sound. There was no road to the homestead.
Lilian Bland took more than 400 photos during the period 1912-1929. A selection of them has been preserved in her Quiet Cove, Quatsino, British Columbia photo album and are reproduced here in album order.

The J.P.
The ‘Justice of the Peace’ was an ordinary citizen given limited powers by Provincial and Federal Governments. Among their duties they had the power to marry couples and to detain trouble makers. J.P.’s were very common long years ago as police were few and far between, and very often many hours away from where they were needed. (Harry Paulsen)
